What do you guys think about Donovon Tate? Looks like a big boom or bust prospect to me, great athletiscm but hasn't really shown much because he splits his time between two sports. Unless you think he is the next Bo Jackson...
![]() He just signed with UNC for Football/Baseball. Do the Padre's continue to hold his rights, like in the NBA? In my personal opinion, we should contact Tony Gwynn Sr. Ask him if he can convince Strasburg to stay another year at San Diego State, we purposely bomb the next season so we can draft him 1st overall. In return Then hire Tony Gwynn Sr. as our head coach Then make a move for Justin Masterson as our relief pitcher behind Strasburg. That should be a quality pitching rotation to build around, no?

If Strasburg doesn't sign with the Nationals and goes back to SDSU for a year by some miracle, The Padres won't have to purposely lose games to get the number one...it will happen naturally...this season is just a complete joke.

Trading Peavy should be a surefire way to get the 1st overall pick. Wonder what we can get for him?

Peavy won't be healthy enough to trade by the trade deadline...he might not pitch again this year. His trade value will be lower until he shows the injury wont affect him so i think he will still be a Padre at the start of next year...I hate to even think it, but Adrian might become a bargaining chip next year too to dig ourselves out of this hole.

We need a piece to build around(see Lincecum with Giants), I just hope Strasburg's negotiations fall through & he wants to enjoy another year of college life.
Wonder what Gwynn's would say if the Padre's offered him the manager spot(replacing Bud Black) or the pitching coaching spot & get to build around Strasburg as the #1 pick. As well as make a trade for Masterson, then he would have two pitchers in the rotation he coached at SDSU, already familiar with his style & he could continue to further their development as they push each other. Even if it costs us Gonzalez, Peavy & a terrible season over the next year and a half. Strasburg/Masterson would be a deadly rotation for the next decade plus. http://www.examiner.com/x-1742-San-Diego-Padres-Examiner~y2009m6d10-Padres-take-Donovan-Tate-with-first-pick Do the Padre's still retain his draft rights(can they sign him after he is done with college)? Personally I would have took Tony Sanchez, with his great BC experience as a catcher + hitter. Next year watch out for local guy Victor Sanchez in the 2010 draft.

No, if he's not signed by the August-something deadline, the Padres lose all rights to him. Another team can draft him next year, and next year, and so on until he signs with someone. That happens frequently with high school players, especially in the middle rounds

Supposedly negotiations have been very quiet, but I can't confirm that with a reliable source
