Default "Jumbo" Shimpf -- Padres' Rookie of the Year

Ryan Shimpf: this guy is in the minor leagues in the Toronto system for 8 years, comes over to the Padres, gets promoted from the minor leagues, since June as a Padre, has been knocking the cover off the ball: Home Runs, doubles, that kind of thing.

I have become pretty cynical about professional sports over the years, but this is a "feel good" story -- guy spends FOREVER down in the bushes, finally gets a chance, and boy, does he make the most of it. Not hard to identify with this guy: you get kicked around in your own profession, and after long labors, finally have some success. A baseball version of the "Rocky" story, if you will.
