In their 44 yrs pf MLB history the Padres farm system has produced some quality players and 4 HOFers, but not lately, so a recap is in order.
CA Smith started with a barren farm, as the first owner it was expected, the plan was to develop pitchers and trad them for stablished players, his 2 biggest acomplishments, the drafting of Dave Winfield(first HOFer) and Randy Jones. The Kroc ownership, the Padres hitted their stride, producing 3 HOFers and more quality players so what went wrong? ¨Trader¨Jack happened, McKeon built the ´84 team and fans and ownership followed him blindly, despite the fact that he guuted the farm sistem, if Mr. Kroc had lived 2-3 more yrs. maybe, maybe he would not have allowed it to happen but from a farm sstem with depth the Padres became a franchise with litle talent. The Big Top, the final nail in the coffin, trade away the talent. Moores did not invest enough in the draft and changed to slowly, started to improve with Sandy Alderson and Grady Fuson, but the franchise was sold in midle of the process. Moorad group more investing but losing the FO after 2 yrs, impact still going on. O´Malley group will begin this season future unknown. 2 drafts were in transition 2009 and ´12 during the 2 sales of the Padres. So now in 5-7 yrs we will know. Only time will tell.
