^^ I agree.

If AJ was smart he would sign Butler right now to an extension instead of having another VJ situation where AJ waits too long and then ends up having a contract dispute & then let's him go.

I agree we should sign Butler now, but is it as easy as just signing him? I wonder if he will just sign a contract now while he keeps gaining more and more stock. I wonder if his agnets will tell him to keep increasing his value.

As fans we always seem to imply that these players are just drones that don't understand thier stock keeps rising.

That is part of the game... There is a chance that AJ Offers a perfectly fair deal for what he has done so far and Butler says "No thanks, I will be worth a lot more after this season, and even more if I hit the free agency." Then again there is also the chance that he says "Good deal, means I don't need to worry about an injury next year costing me the best contract of my life."

I hope we find a way to keep Butler... he is looking like he is going to be a good player and it is well passed the one game wonder that some players have been... followed by fans calling for contracts and then forgetting about the player a week later.

I would like to see Butler signed... but he is young and getting better so it wouldn't surprise me if things don't happen despite the best efforts of both sides to get something done without screwing themselves over... Butler by taking a deal that is well below open market value... On the flip side Chargers aren't going to give open market value when they have him signed for this duration of this year and all of next.

Every day that passed without Butler getting a new long term deal is a day wasted

This is from the UT's mailbag. I asked about Butler

Quote:
Question: Donald Butler is definitely a star ion the making, any chacnes he gets a contract extension during the year?

Answer: Yes. Expect an extension before the start of next season, after which his rookie contract expires.
Maybe we see him get a contract before the end of the year.

You do realize that Butler's agent probably isn't dumb, and isn't going to just sign a lower value contract now when Butler is clearly becoming a top ILB right?

We'd all LOVE for Butler to sign a lower value contract now. Agents don't see it that way.
