San Diego Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer is expecting a very interesting competition at cornerback and safety during the remainder of the summer. He said the players on the Chargers' roster at the positions have the skill to be good, winning players in the league. He noted the corner competition, as well as the safety competition, will be very intense.

The team is hopeful he is able to stay injury free and he will be given an opportunity to contribute for them during the 2005 season.

San Diego Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer said when OLB Shawne Merriman's holdout situation is resolved, he will probably serve as a linebacker. However, the team has not ruled out using him as a down lineman yet. He added Merriman is going to have a difficult time catching up with the rest of the team because he has not been participating during summer workouts.

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers WR Reche Caldwell seems to be maturing as a player and an individual as he recovers from last season's knee injury. Caldwell proclaimed Saturday, June 11, after his fourth practice in two days at the team's minicamp that he felt "really good." In fact, he said, it is the best he has felt since he started going all out a month ago, as much as 95 percent healthy. "He has the ability to be a No. 1 (receiver) someday," head coach Marty Schottenheimer said of Caldwell. This offseason has been different for Caldwell, consumed largely by rehabilitating his knee and working on some things away from football that just might signal a growth that could help his game including a marriage coming up July 2. "His work ethic was what improved most significantly, and his attention to detail," Schottenheimer said.

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers rookie WR Vincent Jackson was lit up by head coach Marty Schottenheimer near the end of practice Saturday, June 11. Jackson bungled a pass at the back of the end zone. Jackson took his eyes off the ball to check if his feet were inbounds. The play was a perfect example of how Jackson needs to continue to work on his fundamentals.

Jay Paris, of the North County Times, reports San Diego Chargers LB Shaun Phillips is trying to impress the coaching staff at minicamp while he gets a chance to play. Phillips had four sacks last season, which tied for second on the team. He also had an interception, 18 tackles and nine special-teams tackles last season. To be stout against the run, Phillips has doubled his workouts. At the team's current minicamp he is filling in for rookie LB Shawne Merriman who has decided not to participate in the minicamp.
