Question Craig Ochs

Will Ochs get a chance to take some snaps this preseason?

At some point. Maybe Sunday (before the first cut), not the third preseason game (the one where the starters put in the most work), but definitely during the last preseason game. The starters will only play the first series that day.

I see Ochs being on the practice squad in 2005. A fine place for him to be considering the current QB makeup and the possibility of an "opening" in 2006.

Joe.

I hear that he was released today but I cannot read the article. Do you have access to this?

Oh I expect the Bolts will try if he doesn't get "scarfed up" by another team.

Edited: I also fully expect that either way we will be seeing him playing in NFL/E next season if he agrees to go..

Default Chargers release Ochs, Going to CFL may be option for former Buff QB

I found this article on Ochs in the Daily News section..

Daily Camera on Ochs

Craig Ochs' journey to professional football has taken him from Boulder, to Missoula, Mont., and to San Diego.

Now, he may be headed to Canada.

Ochs was officially cut from the San Diego Chargers on Tuesday after his first NFL training camp. He signed with the Chargers out of the University of Montana and didn't see significant playing time in three preseason games. He played in one and was 0-for-1 passing.

The former Fairview prep All-American and Big 12 All-Conference player is now searching for a new team. His agent said he may stay in the NFL, but there are other options.

"We've talked to two or three teams in the NFL who are unsettled with their backups," his agent, Ken Staninger, said. "We are also talking to three teams in the CFL (Canadian Football League)."

Ochs' rights in the CFL belong to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, but that team has a couple young quarterbacks, so it might not be a good fit, according to Staninger. But he could look for other teams who need quarterbacks. The CFL season started in June.

It will be hard for Ochs to catch on in the NFL this season. Teams had to cut down their rosters Tuesday, and most don't sign quarterbacks to their practice squads. The Chargers didn't initially express interest in that option with Ochs.

Staninger said he and Ochs will likely wait a few days for the NFL, then pursue other options. Some way, Ochs wants to play football this season.

"We are going to see what interest we have in a week, and then we might look at the Canadian league or see if Arena is something we should consider at this time," Staninger said.

Ochs former teammate, Marques Harris, is second on the depth chart at linebacker with the Chargers and wasn't cut. Running back Bobby Purify is still with the 49ers after leading them in rushing in the first game of the preseason.

Sam Wilder was traded from Dallas to Tampa Bay during the preseason, but was cut by the Buccaneers. Former Niwot and CU star Matt McChesney was cut by the Rams on July 27.

Ochs' former Fairview teammate, offensive lineman Mike Johnson, was cut by the Chiefs. All the players can sign with the teams' practice squads or with another team.
