Sports Illustrated.com "truth & rumors"
a day after reporting that PR was gone for abraham (a move for a vet who doesnt fit our D and has an attitude problem aka I cant see AJ doin it so its prob some crap made up to drive the price up for the redskins & their own PR) SI says that Drew Brees is more likely to be the quarterback leaving after this year...but that we'll prob franchise him again and just wait to see what happens...personally, if you are the lions, bucs, dolphins, or any team that wants a west coast type attack, you'd have to be crazy not to take Drew over PR, Drew makes good reads, manages the game and has accuracy to let his recievers pile up YAC yardage. That being said, if Drew gets us to the playoffs with the schedule that we have...then he has the cajones to be a Super Bowl winning qb (as sson as we get rid of marty, but I wont get in to that) |

Suppose the powers that are in charge of the Bolts are convinced that Philip Rivers is a sure fire NFL Quarterback. What if they are convinced that he'll be at least as good as Drew? If that's the case, then look at it from the money angle. Drew will require a new contract - probably a large bonus and a long term high priced salary. Rivers already has a contract and has already been paid his signing bonus. The team could come out about $10 mil. ahead by putting the franchise tag on Drew and then trading him. (Franchised player = 2 first round picks) The $10 mil. saved could be used to sign a FA Safety and perhaps a OT or WR. The draft picks would probably be one this year and one next year. Trading Drew could conceivably allow them to end up filling three needs next season and still have two firsts for the following year. In short, it could set up the franchise for some long term success.
I've always backed Drew. I always believed he'd be a good NFL Quarterback and it turned out to be true but if the same is true of Philip, the team would be better off in the long run to keep Rivers and trade Drew. So ask yourself "am I a Charger fan or a Brees fan?" because it may well come out this way. This is a business and money matters. You're fooling yourself if you think it doesn't matter.

There was no "open competition". If there was, PR would have had at least one preseason game series with the first team offense. But PR played zero plays in the preseason with the first team offense.
