And like college, taking away scholarships and such, how about reducing their cap number limiting their FA signing ability for next year (since they cant do anything about this years cap). Taking away their 2nd rd picks isnt enough. A 1st should've been included as well.

I think the punishment was strong enough. Goodell specifically targeted the persons responsible for instituting and maintaining the bounties, and hit both of them pretty hard personally. I think that is a stronger deterrent than if they only penalized the program (i.e. postseason ban, taking away more draft picks.) In college, this doesn't work because for example Carroll was long gone to the NFL with his big NFL contract before the NCAA came down on USC.

They also did punish the franchise to a lesser extent. All the reports I've read have said the owner demanded to the GM to make sure the bounties stopped, the GM said they were over but let things continue. So I think overall the judgement was sound- they still took away a couple of higher picks.

They also lost a 2nd rd pick this year and next year. The GM was suspended 8 games and the LB Coach was suspended 6 games.

I suspect that Payton will appeal, possibly get the suspension reduced. maybe.

An appeal can go both ways per definition. So an appeal from Payton may end in a harsher punishment and not necessarly in a more lenient. So Payton should really think about appealing a decision made for a heinous act.

I wonder if the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Saints seasons should be marked with an asterisk and if the Super Bowl they "won" should also receive an asterisk.

This is not good for the Saints.

It would be awesome if they did an ESPN This is Sportscenter commercial with Payton specifically involving some sort of in-office bounties. But they obviously wouldn't do that.

Correct. That's a valuable pick to lose and moves us up one slot (to #78) in the 3rd round.

It's a crushing punishment for the Saints. As I see it, they'll need to hire a new head coach ASAP. It would be unfair to put a lame duck HC in there for a whole season. Sean Payton will be no doubt be a hot coaching candidate in 2013.
