After reading the article about who is making the final roster decisions, I wanted to broach the subject with all of my fellow fan forum posters and get better educated myself if not outright notice a change in the team's procedures and/or structure.

Prior to this, I had the understanding that Tom Telesco as GM and whoever was our Head Coach were the ones who made the final decisions on both final roster cuts as well as entry Draft decisions. Now the article reads that John Spanos as VP of FB Operations, will be the one with Head Coach Lynn, who will make final roster decisions.

First, Did I read and understand this correctly?

Was my previous understanding incorrect about the GM doing this with HC?

Finally, is this the first year that VPoFBO John Spanos is doing this?

FIRST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have a list of our Subs, a blind monkey playing pin the tail on the donkey could make our cuts this year.

It would be a stunning level of incompetence to not have a collaboration of many different components when making these decisions. I would expect, at the very least, the following: J Spanos, TT, AL, Position Coaches, Contract/Cap specialist, League Rules specialist, Head of Scouting, Head of College scouting, Head of Pro Players scouting..... There are just too many things that each decision impacts for this process to be completed by a couple guys.

True. You have hit the main point. While the HC & his assistants want the best roster possible and do have a lot of influence, they work within a structure including many others, some of whom may set the standards. Assembling the 90 man offseason roster is a group effort.
I suspect the final cuts from 90 to 53 are primarily the HC, his coordinators & position coaches with some GM & Exec oversight.

Forgive me all, please!! My autism has its ups and downs, believe me!!

I had assumed that any article of news on the Chargers.com website itself was fair game for referral without a specific link needing to be posted. My bad on that one.

It may also be my bad as the autism causes me to take very literally what is said or written because I have to reverse engineer everything so as to communicate at all with other humans. Animals and computers do not give me such problems... but I digress. So here is the link:

That does seem weird they didn't mention TT in that article. I'm not even going to try and speculate. I would think TT has some sort of say in the decision but maybe not? :noidea:

It was an interview with Spanos & Lynn. Telesco is the GM and definitely has some say so unless John is taking over the GM position.
Something to keep an eye on I guess. I doubt that TT's authority and responsibilities have changed much - yet. In the past Dean has backed his GM above all others but of course his son wasn't in that mix then.

Maybe that's why the only coaches and GMs that accept jobs here are either 1) bad or 2) inexperienced.

The Chargers have had a lot of HOF nominees for HC & GM.

First, Did I read and understand this correctly?

The article indicates that Spanos and Lynn will be part of the process. It does NOT say that they, ONLY, will be making the decisions.

There will be many voices at The Table, including TT's. Frozen provided a good list, above.

p.s. Mods should change title.

I agree with the previous posters !!

See, I knew the CMB folks would set me straight on this!!

Thanks to all!! I tried but there does not seem to be the ability to change the thread title - Isn't Freak a Magic Mod these days?? He managed to get the team moved to Carson, after all!! So it seems he could do me the favor, ...... :horn:

I liked this part of the write up in blue, it's gonna be real interesting this yr with so many players (1,147) becoming available at one time after the last pre season game, I like the change, but it's gonna be a long hectic day for the decision makers sifting through it all.

the Bolts are furiously keeping tabs on every other team as well as their own. It’s imperative they have a firm grasp on the 31 other teams in the NFL.

After all, 1,147 players from those teams will become available all at the same time.

“This is often referred to as the pro scouting department’s draft because there are a lot of players in one day going on the waiver wire,” Spanos said. “We need to know all those players, and if they can help us. Now, we like the team that we have, but we are always searching for ways to improve.”

Good luck to them!

Go Chargers! :logo

I've been thinking about that, too.

There's going to be a CRAZY rush the day of and after cut downs. Better have your pro scouts watching every single team very closely. Seems almost like a works-program for pro scouts.

Yes indeed. This is the first time players are being released from 90-53 players so there is more players to account for all in one time.

Nice to have the initial cut to 75 in the past. Players on the cusp have this weekend to show they belong on their current teams and/or it's their resume on tape to stay alive in the NFL.

Drafting WR Mike Williams as their #1 draft pick (the Chargers were loaded with good WR's) and then drafting an offensive lineman Lamb as their #2 pick was clearly a forward move by the Spanos' post Rivers and Inglewood.

Guess what? So far the Spanos' plan is looking both greedily calculating and a failure thus far. Williams is an unknown and Lamb is out for the season. It couldn't happen to a nicer owner.

John Spanos was named President—Football operations for the Chargers in May 2015. He oversees all of the team’s football operations, including player personnel, coaching, player finance and the salary cap, medical, equipment, video, player engagement and security.

Yea, what a mistake to draft two guys that got injured. How stupid. Can't they see the future and know who will be injured?

The Patriots/Steelers/Giants/etc. organizations can do it, why not the Chargers?
