View Full Version : What is a Countdown and why do we use it?

MoveitMister sent me this note/idea. I think it sounds good. Check it out -

There is a racing site that I enjoy that has a somewhat humorous way of dealing with individuals that are trolls, that made me want to see if we can do something similiar here. It brings the regulars together in much the same way 8er and Rip concluded with Pointblank, but takes is a step farther.

It's called a countdown. The offending party is given every chance to present their side of the debate and once they begin to get rude and nasty one of the regular members posts a farewell to the troll by doing a countdown. Since this is a football site and our guys are fully capable of taking care of themselves the first member posts 5. As the conversation degrades the next member that wants the offending poster gone will post 4 and on down the line until they get to ZERO at which point, if a moderator sees what's going on, the offending poster is assisted from the forum by the members wishes and the moderators consent to ban that person.

It brings the regular membership together, united against someone who's only posting to get the group ticked off & has no intention of having an intelligent conversation about the subject & does it in a celebratory way.

Sounds like a fun way to handle the trolls - what do you think? should we try it?

So long as the moderators have the final say, it should not get out of control. Moderators are moderators because they are more moderate and less likely to do things rashly.

You would think that this is a forum that cures cancer! I am a member of only one other forum- a mixed martial arts forum that uses colored belts to distinguish between rookies and veterans. They are currently thinking of not letting anyone start a thread until they move up from white to orange belt ( two promotions) --

Is it really that annoying that some new guy joins and wants to ask if Brees should be traded-- after all of the veterans figured this out 2 months ago in the Old School forum?
Does it hurt your feelings that much to have some random 15 year old Raider fan call you a doo doo head?
Did you just join this forum to talk to 5 people and not hear any views that you dont agree with or that you think are silly?

Cool-- me too!

Good luck with the Gestapo stuff!

I like it, it is nice in here right now, but as the season progresses and this board starts getting linked on other teams boards we may need this.

I'm going to address this .....

I will not say there is not a clique, because it is fairly obvious that there is a large group of posters who are very familiar with each other. This familiarity includes strong "real" friendships, "virtual" friendships, and some are even family members.

Do we exclude posters? No. We welcome new posters, and you will even find that the two moderators of this forum are probably the best at greeting newly arrived members to this board, and previously, to the UT board.

Some of us go back to the "old" UT boards, and started to get to "know" each other then. Some of us have trekked to San Diego and met others at home games. Some of us are season ticket holders and meet and greet each other at every game.

Posters become "regulars" after they have visited the forums over a period of time. On the UT, we had some regulars with thousands of posts, and others - who were equally or more respected - with just a couple hundred posts. It's not the quantity of posts, but rather their quality.

Not all posters come in and become instantly welcome. One poster, two years ago, came in to the UT "Brees vs. Flutie, you make the call" thread, and instantly bumped heads with me. We hated each other. This week that same poster has flown from Germany to spend the week at my house in San Antonio, TX so that we can attend the season opener together in Houston. I am now proud to call my former enemy, "Sandolf", one of my best friends.

Repetitive threads are annoying. Yes, we probably should be more tolerant, but it gets old after we have read the same take on the same subject, and there are multiple threads started on the same day. Almost to a tee, all threads of that kind will be started by "newbies." A little reading is all most of us ask someone new to do.

Boards do evolve a "pack" mentality. Especially when someone new picks on a regular, or when a group comes in and floods the board with multiple putdowns of our team. A recent example is when a large segment of the NC State crowd trashed the Bolts during the Rivers contract holdout. We reacted to their statements, and a lot of it was not pretty. ~ Can I take this moment to apologize to the Rivers' fans for overreacting??? ~

We welcome new posters. Many "new posters" soon become "regulars." Some "regulars" soon break into the so-called "clique". Mostly, it's a factor of time, and quality posts.

I, for one, hope the "clique" continues to expand.

Go Bolts !!!!

I know, as a newbie, that there are some of the so called "VETS" who will jump on a newbies opinion and trash talk. It happened to me in the other fourm and I was banned for defending myself. Once I called and found the right person to talk to about this I was back on, so I dont agree 100% with this ban by commitee unless the mod goes through the whole thread and see who started what. I also think a "VET" should then be banned or suspended for the infraction, the same as a newbie.

Any social evironment will have cliques created. This is not a bad thing, it is just how the human social animal works. The prior UT 'clique' did not seem intolerent in my opinion. The members of said clique were/are opinionated and would speak what they thought but didn't seem to go out of their way to attack anyone who didn't challenge them personally.

As for vet versus newbie argumetns? I don't care where you are the 'vet' will always get the benefit of the doubt. I don't see how you can get banned if your arguments are thought out and not made personal. We have many different opinions on how to make this team better but it is hard to get dismissed if you are passionate about the team and not attacking the poster themselves.

Ok kids, now play nice even if the adults don't.i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif

I came in here for the first time last night and I was pleasantly surprised at how friendly everyone was. I started posting on the NE vs Indy Gameday thread and I could tell from reading the posts that most of the posters there already knew each other, but they didn't treat me like "the new guy." (They made fun of me for not being able to quote posts, but I told them all to screw-off and die, and we were good after that. i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif j/k )

One of the reasons I took one look at SDUT forums a couple years ago and ran away screaming wasn't because of the cliques, but because of the trolls and the people who did not care about the Chargers at all but were only there to support a player. Let me add that if you came to the Chargers because you're a fan of a specific player, SWEET! But if you start acting like you'd rather see the team lose than see your guy on the bench, then I think you're unreasonable. I really got the feeling when I stumbled on the Brees vs flutie thread on SDUT that some members would have preferred to see Brees die of cancer than to watch him start over their hero.

I guess what I'm saying is I like the idea of having some defense against trolls. Oh, and on the same token, people should try not to be sensitive. I get the feeling the vets who know each other have a lot of inside jokes, and it's better to go withthe flow than take offense at an idle comment or joke.

The purpose of the countdown would be to avoid bannings, to let the person realize that they are considered as going a bit too far. We haven't banned a single person and I'd love to see it remain that way. However, if we get people in here calling members a bunch of idiots for being a fan of the team, we'll certainly start a countdown. Isn't the purpose of the forum to post your opinions and have some fun? If someone comes in with the purpose of flaming the members would you want that to be allowed to go on and on? ............. and yes, the Moderators will finally decide if the countdown ends with a banning or a reminder or perhaps we;ll send the guilty party a box of candy. i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif

Was cruzin thru my Texans web site and came across this. Apparently the Doplhin website had a little problem. WASNT ME!!!!!!

After much effort and discussion, the Miami Dolphins have decided to remove the Message Boards feature from MiamiDolphins.com. We can no longer effectively manage these fan forums and present a product that is fan friendly and promotes a family environment, both important qualities of our organization and goals of our web site.

The message boards have been a web site feature since the 2000 season, but we have encountered a wide range of problems. They include trolls, sexual innuendos, indecent language, personal attacks on posters, inappropriate topics, and others.

We have done our best to delete posts that violate our code of conduct and warn or ban the user who posted them upon their discovery. Unfortunately, the volume of problems is such that we feel like we can better use our time by creating and providing quality content that will keep fans like yourselves returning to MiamiDolphins.com.

We appreciate your support of the Miami Dolphins.

Sorry to read that. It can get to be a problem. Most of these forums only have three or four moderators and they can't possibly read all the posts. It sounds like it could work, I wonder what it would look like when we start to play within our Division, and the The Raider Nation.

Sometimes these things get going pretty quick when you have several people online all at once going at it, just like a game day Thread, who is going to monitor it as it strats to steamroll?

Well said, Shamrock. I appreciate your point of view on the matter. As you can see by the number of posts under my name, I am new to this forum. I wasnt trying to come in and challenge the old guard...just thought the rule was a little silly and have seen rules like it work against the best part of what forums are about. I read an "Old Schooler"s post that raised the idea of pitching in money to reward the Defensive player that pummeled a Manning, to a steak dinner and a beer-- and making it a weekly award. I live in Montana, not known for its wealth of Chargers fans, and its cool to chat with people like that. So far I have no complaints and Im sorry if it came out that way

I would never appeal to a moderator just because someone's talking smack. There's a difference between smack-talk and trolling. Only thing I don't like is people who seem to have no other purpose in life but to start flamewars whenever possible. I've been on other forums (non-sports-related) and there's always one or two people everyone knows is only there to annoy everyone else. It seemed like on SDUT, there were a lot more, but I could be wrong. It's just at the time, I was interested in a Charger Fan forum, and it seemed like everyone there hated each other.

I may have just dropped in at a bad time.

One thing that is pretty common within the "regulars" is a good sense of humor, and being able to needle and tease your friends (and to be able to take some needling!) Like I said, a lot of us know each other beyond the confines of these boards. Some knew each other before they came to the forums, but others of us met through these Chargers sites. We do have a "shared history" of nearly the entire run of the UT forum. Therefore some of the "inside" jokes are simply references to things that have occured within that realm.

Igor Unchained,

Honest, I wasn't trying to rip you, and I really hope you didn't take it as such. I just wanted to explain a bit about what goes on here. Like I said, many newbies "graduate" up the social strata that exist on these forums. Heck, the newest moderator here, MoveitMister, was not part of the original "clique" from the UT board. She joined the forum later, became a regular, then "accepted" as part of the "cool club" (as someone put it on the UT forum.) This is not an exclusionary group. Quite the contrary.

Also, we aren't of "like mind" as some people believe. We have, within the "group", pro Brees and anti Brees, pro Marty and anti Marty. We differ on evaluation of talent. We differ on defensive schemes. Etc ... It's just a group of people that are diehard fans of the Chargers.

No, it isn't annoying when some new person asks if a player, coach or owner should be traded, fired or sell the team. What is annoying is when a newborn troll shows up with the intent to get a rise out of the membership by being nasty about it. Debate is welcome from any corner of the globe.

I did not join this forum or even consent to moderate it to only speak to 5 people. I'd like to hear everyone's opinions in an intelligent manner, not from the troll who can only sprout garbage that's only incendiary.

It's funny that you use the word Gestapo.

a secret-police organization employing underhanded and terrorist methods against persons suspected of disloyalty

The trolls that I was thinking of in the beginning were those who's sole purpose is to come into a calm, active forum and starts flame wars just to watch the fireworks. They don't announce that they're here for that purpose. They use guerilla tactics to get what they want. They have not one iota of loyalty to the Chargers, just themselves and their chosen teddy bear(team/player/coach/organization/method).

I thought Roo and I were having a private conversation to develop guidelines for this forum.
Instead of being keeping it private, Roo included everyone by posting it for the world to see.

Does that sound like Gestapo tactics to anyone else?

~I just wanted to make sure The Rivers Fans see this.

We welcome new posters. Many "new posters" soon become "regulars." Some "regulars" soon break into the so-called "clique". Mostly, it's a factor of time, and quality posts. i/expressions/face-icon-small-cool.gif

I, for one, hope the "clique" continues to expand.

Go Bolts !!!!Repetive threads can get to be a bit much. I can understand exactly how you feel. There were weeks when I had to take a timeout from the forums because every argument on the same topic had bored me to tears. Pulling on the ol' full chemsuit with respirator made it tolerable.

I'll tell you the truth, at times when I posted a thread at another forum in the beginning I'd be afraid that a Vet would rip my head off for asking what everyone thought about a given subject, calling David Boston a TE instead of a WR when that's the body he changed himself into comes to mind. I don't start many threads now because most of the subjects that I'd like to discuss are already out there and inside those same threads I will find someone(s) who's opinion is the same as mine is. So from my standpoint I can understand what a newbie member feels. I've also have been blessed with a number of vets who took me under their wings and have taught me a thing or two about football, the Chargers, and life in general. Both groups have enhanced my life and I want to thank them for it. I can now post a thread and if no one agrees with me, that's their loss. <img src="i/expressions/f

I guess what I'm saying is I like the idea of having some defense against trolls. Oh, and on the same token, people should try not to be sensitive. I get the feeling the vets who know each other have a lot of inside jokes, and it's better to go withthe flow than take offense at an idle comment or joke.You sure did wade right in there and we all had a pretty good time. Hoping and praying that our Chargers look half as good at the best when this season is over or take the Falcon/Ravens/Panthers worst to first route to the Super Bowl this year.

The vets need to be more tolerant of the newbies. Don't forget how it was when you started.
Had to add the other side of the coin. You are exactly right, go with the flow. i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif

Even tough They take our Castoffs,We are not the Dolphins website, What does them getting rid of their fan forum mean to usSDR, I think what pointblank is trying to say is that we should be grateful that the Chargers opened this forum and he/she showed us an example of what happens when things get out of hand and uncivilized.

We're all new to this forum. The suggestion for a countdown isn't set as a rule. Sometimes silly works. It works for the forum that I was talking to Roo about. I've asked, there needs to be a Smack Forum, with Rules of course, that way we could go at it, and if someone wanted to venture in, well then join in.

Smack is not about flame throwing, smack is not about attacking people, smack is not about trying to hurt people, smack is not about Political debates, Racist Comments, Family Bashing, Religion, or anything that can be Offensive.

Smack is hard Core Fans going at it with insults, and twisting words around, everything is in Fun, and its come to an art form since Fan Forums have come to be! But beware the Smack forum is not for the feint at Heart, its not for the meek.

Like I said there are Rules, and they are even stricter then a normal Board, but thats the fun of it. Its all in Fun.

Yep, or just move the thread over to that area if it de-evolves.

The General Discussion area is nice, but having different directions to send members in fosters more discussion in the appropriate areas, so that guys like Thunderstuck who don't want to or don't have the skills to fully function as a Smacker can read, but avoid getting into a Smack session.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sounds like a fun way to handle the trolls - what do you think? should we try it?A few people have been asking what a countdown is and why it's used.
I thought I resurrect this thread for explanation purposes.
I like the idea of doing a countdown for the trolls. NYSackExchange over on the UT forum is a complete troll and would be a perfect example of someone to do this to. He pretends to be cool, but then 1) starts a thread when he could just comment on an existing thread 2) gives our team props but throws in a seemingly innocent statement about LT that is sure to elicit some hate and 3) responds in kind while escalating it into a straight up flame war.
I have to say that I wish some people would not take the bait when people like that come into our boards. It would make him go away quicker. Love the countdown idea!
The best way to handle trolls is not to feed them. If you think they are just looking to push buttons and you reply then you've taken their bait - just ignore them. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and should be free to express it as everyone else is. With this method, I think you're encouraging "elite" groups and cliques that is unfair to newbies on this forum (this isn't high school). Newbies will be fearful of being banned and not express their opinions freely.
If there is a problem with a blatant troll the "Report this to a Moderator" link is always there to use.
If there is a problem with a blatant troll the "Report this to a Moderator" link is always there to use.Elite groups and cliques can't abuse this system because they don't hold the power to ban the trolls.
This forum turns over approx. 400 messages on a slow day and over 1000 after a busy, lousy gameday.
That's a lot of reading to find those messages that are offensive.
If someone uses the Countdown system instead of commenting/feeding the troll and quotes the message in question along with the Countdown, it makes it easier to hunt down those offensive messages.
The report to moderator button isn't being used to find these posts by the majority of the membership.
And this group of 'newbies' is anything but fearful. i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif
Can we have a RULE that all threads started by non-Chargers fans get reported and moved to the Smack Section?
Unless they are asking specific questions (non smack stuff) about the Bolts.
This junk by Jets fans needs to either go to smack or be deleted.
Thanks for this comment Shamrock... I think having the opportunity to meet you in person and sit next to you at a Chargers game was indeed a most valuable experience considering the process we went through to get that far. It has become somewhat obvious to me that most of the so-called "regulars" have evolved as "internet" personalities and this whole experience of getting to know people "online" has its advantages and disadvantages... most of which "newbies" can´t possibly be sensitive to. I have had HUGE fights with EVERY poster on my buddy list in this forum... which probably isn´t a coincidence.
It is indeed interesting to meet these internet personalities in person. It is a bit of a transition to read posts and then to formulate opinions of an individual and then meet them in person. Many of the posts when "converted" into face to face conversations take on a whole different perspective. I guess what I am trying to say you are less likely to formulate a "negative opinion" of a poster and formulate an opinion of respect for the depth of understanding and commitment to the Chargers for the same person when met face to face.
It is easy to post an opinion but it leaves the reader with a "Stop sign of thought process" of sorts.... a taste lingers in the pallate - good or bad. I don't know if this makes sense but there it is..... i/expressions/SDG_Bolt.gif
The next step is you start collecting Charger memorabilia. After a while you gather enough of it that you have to decorate a room with it and that room soon becomes known as the "Charger room". The "Charger room" in my house doubles as the office and a place to take a nap. Sometimes it becomes a guest room, but the guest(s) must pretend like they love the Chargers or I direct them to a nearby Motel. i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif My late wife learned to just let me alone with my "Charger kookiness" but my present wife really hates it. i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif However, nothing can keep me from watching the Bolts, anyone that knows me well knows I won't attend anything anywhere when the Chargers are on. i/expressions/SDG_Bolt.gif
I told this wife (my second wife) after our first date, she had to accept me "as is" with all the trappings of the Chargers and the horn.
Well, our first date was at the Chargers and Chiefs Round One playoff game in January of 1993. It was raining HARD. The parking lot was electric nonetheless. To make a long story short on the first date with the wife, I climbed on top of the motor home in the rain with my trumpet and I began to play "Charge". This was right before the game. Another fan had a KC effigy which we lit on fire and the crowd went nuts as I switched to "TAPS" on the horn. I have no clue what he doused the effigy in to get it on fire but the effigy is hanging from a hangmans noose and the bro is swing it on fire in the rain. The crowd is now in a fenzy and hundreds are gathered around this event. The girlfriend / now wife steps out of the motor home wondering what the hell was up as she had no clue I played a trumpet and that I had been a menace in the parking lot for so many years. She turned "beet red" with embarassment and hid in the motor home. Too funny. She thought I was out of my gourd ... she was right and still married me. Oh btw: her first two husbands are dead so I may as well live it up, as you never know when the "black widow" will strilke again. True story and a classic memory. i/expressions/beer.gifi/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gifi/expressions/SDG_Bolt.gif
aye aye boss. I know there are some who are bound to use this for the hell of it. Speaking for myself, I'll use my best judgement.
I'll use other people's good judgement. ;)
MoveitMister sent me this note/idea. I think it sounds good. Check it out -
There is a racing site that I enjoy that has a somewhat humorous way of dealing with individuals that are trolls, that made me want to see if we can do something similiar here. It brings the regulars together in much the same way 8er and Rip concluded with Pointblank, but takes is a step farther.
It's called a countdown. The offending party is given every chance to present their side of the debate and once they begin to get rude and nasty one of the regular members posts a farewell to the troll by doing a countdown. Since this is a football site and our guys are fully capable of taking care of themselves the first member posts 5. As the conversation degrades the next member that wants the offending poster gone will post 4 and on down the line until they get to ZERO at which point, if a moderator sees what's going on, the offending poster is assisted from the forum by the members wishes and the moderators consent to ban that person.
It brings the regular membership together, united against someone who's only posting to get the group ticked off & has no intention of having an intelligent conversation about the subject & does it in a celebratory way.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sounds like a fun way to handle the trolls - what do you think? should we try it?

I am in agreement - I vote to implmement this to see how it works.

Also please remember that "http://forums.chargers.com/images/buttons/report.gif" is your other tool to help moderators. "Report post" hits every mod's email box.

It's not a matter of "freedom of speech"... This is a message board, you can say what you want as long as it contributes to the discussion of football and keeps things organized...

You can't go around on the streets screaming curse words like a maniac, because it's disorderly. Same goes here...

Another message board has a good point about "freedom of speech":

Think of a message board as like a party at somebody's house. If a person starts being rude, personally attacking other guests and violating house rules, that person is going to be asked to leave.

This message board is run by a private company. Nobody has the right to be here, therefore, nobody has the right to "free speech" here.

And who is this so called private company? Should be the San Diego Chargers!

The Chargers are a private company, as are all but one other NFL team.

The Green Bay Packers are the only publicly-traded NFL team. But I bet they still have message board rules.

If you disagree with the rules, use the contact form and complain. Let's dispense with using semantics to cloud the issue, shall we?

it's all about terms of service nick. when you sign up at any forum, chatroom, just about anything on the net, you are signing away your freedom of speech when you agree to their terms of service. you signed it, so you gotta deal with it.

(clicking the "i agree" button = signing)

phhhhhhhhh ahahha. You are so FANTASTIC! you'll find just about every civilized forum on the internet operates in this manner, so acting like it's just the chargers forum that enforces their terms of service is totally wrong.

See....if you came to talk about Chargers football and not Chargers fans you would probably find yourself a warmer welcome. If you just like arguing with people, there are many places to go and do that.
We understand you are "too cool for rules"....how about just treating the people on this forum with respect and keeping your posts football oriented until you figure out how things work around here. Welcome to the forum. :Beer:

1st - Actually you understand NOTHING about me.
2nd - I am to cool for you.
3rd - I do treat respectable people with respect. Just like I do to Nick Canepa. Not other people who try and boast themselves over basicaly nothing. Canepa is far from jealous over a online forum mod. GET REAL!
4th - There is nothing to figure out.
5th - You are very late on your welcome so take it back stuff it
somewhere.
6th - Thanks for coming to the rescue of another grown man...

Looks like people are speaking their minds to me....look at chargerooislame, that guy is definately getting some stuff off of his chest. It is just cooler when people keep their venting from being directed at other posters IMO.
