That site does have a lot of information, but I don't think there draft is very realistic for us. A receiver first, followed by a CB? Those are not high priority needs for us. People who are not familiar with the Chargers would think they are, so these guys have not studied us very much yet. Still, it is a good site for information.

Two things. Depth and consistency. Davis and Florence have missed games with injury, and created a revolving door at that cornerback spot. I am not sold on either guy being a full time starter, but I do think Jones can be, and it would put those guys in position to play the nickle and dime, where, IMHO, they would stay healthy, and have more favorable matchups.

Let me add this. I don't think this team needs much of anything. Drafting guys like BMW and Jones are a luxury, IMO.

You don't think we need anything? How about a pass rush?

I could see your point about our CB's, if their injuries were a chronic thing. But they have not been to this point. If you go and draft a new CB, he will take time to learn to play in the NFL. If you also move one of our current CB's to FS, he will also take time to learn the position. So, now you will have half the secondary learning their positions. How will that improve the play or help the team?

Generating a pass rush, in a 3-4 is as much a product of scheme as it is the players. You don't count on your ends to generate a pass rush, you use specific extra rushers and blitz schemes to generate it. The dline is there to absorb blocks and let the linebackers make plays. Anything else is gravy. I have 3 brothers all Steeler fans. I've watched that team play the 3-4 for a decade, and their dline are a bunch of no names. Sorry, I don't buy the need for a bigtime DE in a 3-4...

That's something that will come, with another year of the whole team in the system. We have the LBs, to get a great pass rush, they just need to be used properly.

As for the learning curve, the same can be said for any position being drated, so it's not a good argument, IMO, for or against drafting anyone. Whomever you would want, over those picks, would take time to learn. I'd be willing to wager, that one of the current young CBs we have, could make the move to FS faster than any FS we would draft.

This site is pretty cool since it's a Chargers only draft site, but I have a few issues with the mock draft. First off, I disagree with Adam "Pac man" Jones falling to #11. There is no doubt this guy will be taken top 6, he is going to run a sub 4.3 40 and is the most polished DB in the draft. The Titans are going to take him if he doesn't get taken before. I don't think Mike Williams will go this high, the highest will be #9 to the Redskins, who need another red zone threat because Rod Gardner is leaving.

Derrick Johnson may drop because of his position, but I think he's the best defensive player in the draft. I personally don't see him going this high, but I hope he drops to #12 so the Chargers could grab him. Him and Edwards will be a great combo.

One thing I agree with is Troy Williamson dropping. I don't think teams with a top 15 pick will take a chance on a guy who had 43 receptions his final college year. If he didn't dominate at the college level then why will he be able to in the pros. 43 receptions and under 1000 yards isn't acceptable to me.

Also the site in the post above now has a feature on the Moss trade and one on Troy Williamson as well....plus they will be going over the combine in the next few days.

Totally interesting that - http://www.eastcoastsportsnews.com/2005PreDraft.html - had Shazor listed as the 5th best outside linebacker prospect! Although many profiles have called him a tweener, this is the first site I've seen to actually project him going as an OLB instead of a SS. Personally, I don't think he'll make the transition from safety to LB for a few more years if it happens at all. Another scenario to consider is that he may be the future prototype SS. With the TE position changing like it is, teams may be forced to go to a 6'4", 230 pound plus safety with 4.45 speed just to cope. Only problem is that most guys with those stats who would rather play offense.

That is probably true, and for those that dont update daily at this time of year, the scenarios are always changing. Picks being traded and free agents being signed, all that stuff is happening every day at this point....and only a full time mock guy could really even follow all of that and still have the time to update it enough.

Maybe you can fill me in on why Pac Man Jones is slated to go before Antrel Rolle in so many mocks.....I dont see it and neither of them competed in the combine. I think Antrel already had his Pro Day, but I dont think we have seen anything of Pac Man yet to show he is any better than Rolle. Im not trying to flame, I just wonder what everyone knows that I dont.

Keep up the good work on the mock, I look forward to seeing round 2 soon!

The reason Pac-Man will go before Rolle is for one, the titans like him. He also has better Athletic abitlity and scouts see more potential in him. He is better at reading the QB and makes very good moves on the ball, wich is sometimes risky but something you look for in a scout. I have only one of the Top Three Halbacks going in the Top 10 in My Mock because I feel there will be an early run on Corners which may involve teams that are looking for a Halfback in the Draft and much like last years Draft I expect the HB's to slip a bit...it's a position that has lost it's value over the years and this Draft is loaded with solid Prospects at that position that will still be available in the third round and on the second day...plus there are three veteran backs (Edgerrin James, Shaun Alexander and Travis Henry) that are available and could be involved in a Draft Day trade...this Mock will be Updated numerous times between now and the Draft.

1. San Francisco 49'ers - QB Aaron Rodgers (California)...The Niners are in a difficult position because they need more than just one prospect ...but ...the trade value for this pick isn't there this year...Head Coach Mike Nolan has stated that he will take a QB somewhere early in the Draft and in 6 of the last 7 years a QB was taken first overall...make it 7 out of 8 as the Niners select Aaron Rodgers of Cal.

2. Miami Dolphins - QB Alex Smith (Utah)... After viewing his private workout and sitting down with Smith to break down film the Dolphins arrived at the decision that Smith is their man IF he doesn't go to the Niners at the first pick...Dolphins Coach Nick Saban has done a terrific job creating a smoke screen up to now.

3. Cleveland Browns - OLB/DE Shawne Merriman (Maryland)...The Browns upgraded their Offensive Line in Free Agency and acquired QB Trent Dilfer to lead the team and tutor young QB Luke McCown...so now it's time for New Head Coach Romeo Crennel to land the one player that he feels will make an instant impact on the team...Crennel's Defensive Schemes always revolve around the Linebacker position and the Browns need to upgrade at that position and add a player that can rush the passer as well...Merriman fits that description and can play with his hand down in a 4-3 or kick out to OLB in a 3-4 Scheme...Merriman is flying up the teams Draft boards and is now considered the number one Defensive Prospect in this Draft.

4. Chicago Bears - WR Braylon Edwards (Michigan)......New Bears Offensive Coordinator Ron Turner has stated that he wants to make running the football a priority in the Windy City and has Thomas Jones and Adrian Peterson at his disposal...the Bears signed FA WR Muhsin Muhammed to a long term contract...but ...Muhammed is getting up there in age and the chance to add another play-maker to the Bears Receiving core is too tough to pass on here.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - HB Ronnie Brown (Auburn)...The Bucs fill their greatest need with this pick, but have a tough decision in which back to choose...the team goes with Brown of Auburn since he's the most complete back in this Draft.

6. Tennessee Titans - WR Mike Williams (USC)...The Titans had a Salary cap mess that they cleaned up and had to part with several starters to get under the Cap...Drafting at this spot requires paying a hefty signing bonus (16.5 Million last year) and big contract (6 years - 40 million last year) that the Titans really don't need at this time...so the team may try to deal down and out of this pick...but...if they stay at #6 look for them to target one of the Top Prospects on the Offensive side of the ball since New Offensive Coordinator Norm Chow is pushing for his former pupil Mike Williams.

7. Minnesota Vikings - LB Derrick Johnson (Texas)...The Vikings are in position to land of the the Drafts top Defensive Prospects at this pick and are happy that DJ has fell to9 them at this pick...the team has improved it's Defense through Free Agency and may have added the last piece of the puzzle with this pick.

8. Arizona Cardinals - CB Antrel Rolle (Miami-Florida)...The Cardinals surprise some of the the experts with this pick because the Card's greatest need is at the Halfback position...but...the Cardinals traded CB Duane Starks to the Patriots and have a HUGE need to fill at the Corner position...Denny Green know

Brandt's big board

http://nfl.com/draft/story/8334953

(March 28, 2005) -- The combine is long gone and most of the major Pro Days have already taken place. NFL teams are left with loads of game film and statistics from the past two months.

For now, San Francisco picks first, Miami picks second and so on. Of course, that can change in a New York minute if a team looking to move up makes a phone call and offers the right kind of deal to make a trade. But one thing we know for sure is that there are 32 picks in the first round. That fact won't change.

So what we have compiled is a list of the top 32 prospects as we see them at this point in time. Please note: The names are in alphabetical order -- not in the order I see them being drafted in.

We also have a list of prospects who are "on the radar" and could hop into the mix as the draft gets closer. After all this time, the consensus is that this is going to be a heck of a draft with plenty of draftable talent. That means there are more than 32 players worth first-round picks.

There are also three "wild cards" in the draft -- players that are really intriguing scouts and coaches. Beauty will be in the eye of beholders come April 23 when these players are taken because no one is sure when they'll go off the board. We'll list them too, and we may add more.

Let's get to the lists.

Top 32 prospects

David Baas, OL, Michigan
Khalif Barnes, OT, Washington
Alex Barron, OT, Florida State
Cedric Benson, RB, Texas
Jammal Brown, OT, Oklahoma
Ronnie Brown, RB, Auburn
Mark Clayton, WR, Oklahoma
Dan Cody, DE, Oklahoma
Channing Crowder, LB, Florida
Thomas Davis, S, Georgia
Braylon Edwards, WR, Michigan
Erasmus James, DE, Wisconsin
Derrick Johnson, LB, Texas
Marcus Johnson, OT, Mississippi
Travis Johnson, DT, Florida State
Adam "Pac-Man" Jones, CB, West Virginia
Shawne Merriman, DE/LB, Maryland
Heath Miller, TE, Virginia
Brodney Pool, S, Oklahoma
David Pollack, DE, Georgia
Aaron Rodgers, QB, Cal
Antrel Rolle, CB, Miami (Fla.)
Carlos Rogers, CB, Auburn
Alex Smith, QB, Utah
Marcus Spears, DE, LSU
Chris Spencer, C, Mississippi
Demarcus Ware, DE, Troy
Corey Webster, CB, LSU
Roddy White, WR, Alabama-Birmingham
Carnell Williams, RB, Auburn
Mike Williams, WR, USC
Troy Williamson, WR, South Carolina

On the radar

Jonathan Babineaux, DT, Iowa
Darryl Blackstock, LB, Virginia
Kevin Burnett, LB, Tennessee
Chris Canty, DL, Virginia
Shaun Cody, DE, USC
Chris Colmer, OL, North Carolina State
Marlin Jackson, CB, Michigan
Terrence Murphy, WR, Texas A&M
Barrett Ruud, LB, Nebraska
Justin Tuck, DE, Notre Dame

Wild cards

Todd Herremans, Saginaw Valley
Two years ago, we uncovered an offensive tackle by the name of Seth Wand. He wound up being drafted by the Texans, starting all 16 games for them in 2004. Herremans is this year's Wand. He has great size (6-6, 321) and is strong. Moreover, he had 26 different teams and plenty of offensive line coaches show up at his Pro Day in the middle of Michigan. That's generally a sign that he has quite a following.

Matt Jones, Arkansas
Is he a quarterback? Is he a wide receiver? Is he a tight end? No one knows for sure, but he's the subject of a lot of talk around the league. I have never seen such intriguing numbers as we see on Jones. He ran four times under 4.40 in the 40 at the combine, also doing a 39-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-6 long jump. Those are just flat-out incredible numbers. And the guy was such a good athlete, he was good enough to start on Arkansas' basketball team in 2003. A lot of coaches have all kinds of ideas on where to play Jones, but only one team will have the chance to draft him.

Adrian McPherson, Florida State
McPherson is a quarterback whose c

I too have heard that Shaun Cody has HAD back problems, but he has said that they are in the past and he feels great. I dont know what else he would say though...."Yeah, my back is one good hit away from being hurt again"?

Igor had "back issues" too that factored into a questions surrounding his health and durability....so far so good with Igor. I dont see Cody slipping out of the first round, I wouldnt be all that surprised to see him fall to us with the 28th pick though.

Very good mock Igor. I expect that Shaun Merriman will go higher than expected because many teams are moving to the 3-4 defense. I liked where you had him in your draft when he goes to the Browns. I really believe that they made take Merriman, Johnson, Rodgers or Smith(whoevers left), or trade down. Romeo is a Defensive Coach, so I would expect them to wait on the QB, as he has seen that you can win with a late round quarterback.

I would love to have Williamson to stretch the field and Cody to stuff the run. AJ wants guys that can hold their own ground and stop the run game, so I love that pick. I've heard that Cincy is interested in him, and I believe that they have the 17th pick. If he's gone, I would like DeMarcus Ware out of Troy State.

Here's some funny news: Denver is supposedly inquiring about trading Reuben Droughns to Cleveland for Ebenezer Ekuban. Ekuban was a first rounder of the Cowboys, and he spent his first season in Cleveland last year. This would mean that Denver would have 3/4 of Cleveland's old defensive line i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif

That would actually be a great move for both teams. Droughns is better than his stats indicate and will be a great runner behind the new guards that Cleveland obtained. He could help out the "Trent Dilfer Experiment" in Cleveland quite a bit. Ekuban isnt a good 3-4 DE and while I would move him to OLB and feel good about it, the Browns are looking for a good 3-4 DE.

As for Merriman, I like the guy and think any 3-4 will be lucky to get him.

Thanks to everyone for providing these links. I added a couple of the prospect video links that were given to us recently. ( The Troy Williamson one is from Rigo and the Bears site one is from Wildfire)

The rest of the links are the ones from the first 3 pages and are just all in one place on the same page now. Thanks to Phicart, FTWbolt, Crazyman, Chargeroo for these links and thanks to all of the rest who post their links on this page. Keep em coming and thanks for sharing what you have found.

Frye shows enough zip
Posted by Andrew Legrand | 1:18 PM CST

by Marla Ridenour

Charlie Frye's T-shirt was already sweat-soaked from nearly 30 minutes of throwing without a break when he stood at the 40-yard line and let 'er rip.

Flat-footed, he launched the ball to receiver Nick Sparks about 60 yards downfield. And he did it more than once. Some called his longest 57 yards, some 65. Whatever the distance, it was impressive.

Anyone who wondered whether the University of Akron quarterback has enough arm strength to make it in the NFL should have had that question answered Friday.

I was reading the draft order at www.draftcrazy.com as listed above. They have San Diego giving their 3rd, 5th, and 6th round picks to Tampa Bay....Do they know something I dont? Does anyone know if it is a typo or do we owe the Bucs 3 draft choices this year? I hope this is a stupid question!

We gave a 3rd and 6th this year and IF McCardell makes the probowl next season , then we owe them a 5th in 2006.

It took a bit of asking around and web site hopping, but I think I have it figured out. We have 7 picks...2 firsts, a 2nd, a 4th, a 5th, a 6th (thanks Boston!), and a 7th.

I wouldnt mind moving down on one of those early picks to get a 3rd rounder. There is alot of great talent in the 3rd round.

No 4th...that went to the Bucs for McCardell or Oben. I think we gave up a 3rd and a 5th for McCardell(we still have another one...thanks shEli!) We gave up a 4th for Oben.

Al's Second Day "GEMS"

The following list of prospects are my Top Five "Gems" for the 2005 NFL Draft.
These Prospects should still be available on the second day of the Draft but could make an impact at the next level.

1. QB Stefan LeFors (Louisville)...If it weren't for his overall lack of ideal height (size) for the QB position, Lefors would be a first day pick and a possible first round selection. Lefors has great athleticism for the position and some NFL Scouts feel he could make a successful switch over to the Defensive side of the ball and play Safety at the next level.

2. HB/RS DeAndra Cobb (Michigan State)...Cobb has everything that Scouts look for in a Halfback except ideal size since he only tips the scales at 5-9.2 191 which makes him a candidate for some playing time as a situational back. However, Cobbs has the ability to "take it to the house" everytime he touches the football and should become a dangerous return man at the next level.

3. OT Todd Herremans (Saginaw Valley St.)...Todd seems to have come out of nowhere to now have a chance at being taken rather early on the Drafts Second Day. Todd was a three year starter at Saginaw and brings great size (6-6.4 310) to the table to go along with enough agility and foot speed to have a chance to make it at the next level.

4. DT Tim Bulman (Boston College)...Tim is a super-strong energizer bunny type that always has his motor running and reminds me alot of a young Chris Hovan when he came out of B.C. The team that selects him on the Drafts second day can count on a player that will give 100% and fight his way into the starting lineup in time.

5. CB Scott Starks (Wisconsin)...Scott is another example of a prospect that has what it takes to be considered a first day pick except ideal size. Starks is only (5-8.2 174) but has excellent cover ability and the speed (4.40) to run with the receivers. Starks is also quite physical for a man of his size and is in on alot of pass breakups

I think AJ would like Tim Bulman, and that he is a great steal on the second day.

There is growing speculation that the Miami Dolphins are more than a little eager to trade down from the #2 overall pick and may be willing to do it for less than you would expect. The most likely suitor at this point appears to be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who may have their sights set on Auburn RB Ronnie Brown, Cal QB Aaron Rodgers or Utah QB Alex Smith. On that note, don't look for either of the signal callers to freefall if either San Francisco or Cleveland pass on them as some have suggested, there are plenty of teams in the top ten interested in them. Look for there to be a lot of talk in the final week before the draft about Miami at #2 and Cleveland at #3 moving down and don't be surprised if both eventually do when all is said and done.

The hottest player in the draft may be Troy DE Demarcus Ware, who now looks like a legitimate Top 15-20 pick. In fact, there is talk that Dallas has really taken a liking to the pass rusher and may prefer him to Shawne Merriman. San Diego at #12 and Houston at #13 are also very interested in Ware and two teams, Atlanta and Philadelphia, are reportedly interested in moving up for a shot at him.

Perhaps one of the most controversial players in this draft is Florida St. OT Alex Barron and if you ask ten people about his draft forcast you may get ten different answers. He could go as high as #6 to Tennessee or fall as far as Houston at #13 or Carolina at #14. With the lack of elite left tackle prospects this year it is hard to imagine someone not gambling on his potential greatness earlier than expected.

Look for Arizona and Buffalo to ultimately consummate the deal to send OT L.J. Shelton to the Bills in exchange for RB Travis Henry but it may not happen until Draft Day. This is basically a game of chicken with both teams wanting to trade to happen but each angling for a little more since it doesn't hurt them to wait another week. Once this trade goes through watch for Arizona to focus on a cornerback with the #8 overall pick with Antrel Rolle reportedly being the guy they covet. (Taken from www.draftcountdown.com )

Does anyone else think that the Cardinals should just pick Ronnie Brown or Cadillac Williams with that pick? I think that now would be a good time to get the franchise RB to go with their great group of WRs.

04/20...WOW!...That's just one word to describe the Pre-Draft deals that took place on Tuesday...first off...the Redskins dealt their third round pick #76 and both their first and fourth round picks in the 2006 Draft for the Broncos first pick (#25) in this weekends Draft...then ESPN's Les Pasquerelli dropped a bombshell when he wrote that he learned that the Redskins are targeting Auburn QB Jason Campbell with the pick (#25 overall) that they acquired from the Broncos...the Redskins appear to be building for the future and are hopefully right with their assessment of Campbell... because they gave up a bundle of picks (a first, third and fourth) to supposedly acquire the Auburn star...also
keep in mind if the Redskins continue to struggle this season the first round pick that they gave up in the trade to the Broncos could turn out to be a top five pick in next years Draft!...if ESPN's report is right...then look for the Redskins to shop QB Patrick Ramsey on Draft day since Mark Brunell will likely return as a veteran starter until Campbell is ready for the job.....off to Oakland where the Raiders dealt starting CB Phillip Buchanon to Houston for the Texans second (pick #47) and third round picks in this year's Draft...by making the deal with the Texans the Raiders now have two picks in the top 47 of the Draft and could package them both to get back into the first round...according to the NFL Trade Chart the Raiders have enough ammunition (950 points) to move up to the Bengals pick (#17 overall) in the first round...the
Raiders are also shopping CB Charles Woodson...but have found no takers up to this point...if the Raiders are successful in trading Woodson
then the team will be looking to replace both of their starting CB's in this Draft or through Free Agency......off to Kansas City where Chiefs GM Carl Peterson has stated that his team's potential trade with the Dolphins for CB Patrick Surtain needs to get done before the opening of Saturday's Draft ...the team wants a contract in place with Surtain before a trade is completed because the current contract situation with Surtain is too complex to be worked out during the hustle and bustle of the Draft proceedings....plus the Chiefs want to know if they will still need to address the CB position with their first pick (#15 overall) in the Draft......just another reminder that Al will be Updating his Mock once again today and his Final Mock will be posted sometime on Friday barring any trades...if any trades involving picks in the first two rounds take place late in the day on Friday...Al will then be re-posting his Final Mock before 8:00am (est) on Saturday morning.
