Free agent pitcher Jon Garland is apparently becoming a Padre.

Padres President Tom Garfinkel, speaking at a Military Appreciation Luncheon Tuesday afternoon at the Torrey Pines Hilton, said the Padres have signed the 30-year-old free agent who last season made $6.25 million while pitching for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Garland signed with the Diamondbacks last Jan. 29 when Garfinkel and Padres CEO Jeff Moorad were still with Arizona.

A 6-foot-6, 205-pound right-hander, Garland was a combined 11-13 with a 4.01 ERA with the Diamondbacks and Dodgers last season.

He was 8-11 with Arizona with a 4.01 ERA in 27 starts before being traded to the Dodgers on Aug. 31. He was 3-2 with a 2.72 ERA in six starts for the Dodgers, but did not pitch in the postseason.

I like this move...throws strikes, and has eaten up innings throughout his career

I do believe that this new owner and GM are committed to being competitive. :)

The word is that this was not supposed to be announced. It just slipped out.

I like it. Can always use quality veteran starting pitching.

Works for me, hopefully he stays healthy and can get the Padres deep into games

I wanted Ben Sheets, but Garland will do. It's nice to have a solid rotation without questions at the beginning of the season!

I wanted Sheets to, but at $10M... he must have really looked special working out for the A's.

I like the rotation, too. It's also nice to know that we have some depth at the position for a change. No more Walter Silva and Josh Geer :)

BTW, what a slap in the face to the Nationals this signing is:

Garland recently rejected a two-year, $15 million offer from the Washington Nationals.

Just curious who do you think will be the Opening Day starter? I'm thinking more about the home opener on April 12.

i like it. not Peavy :(, but not bad at all,i like the big 3 of CY, Latos & Garland. also i like the direction were going, even if we stay mediocre this year, its nice to have a young team with some veterans here n' there,as opposed to flipside. Donovan Tate will be a stud, and i have a feeling Kyle Blanks and Gwynn Jr might break out soon. '08 Rays = '11 Padres?

BUT, i dont think i can handle losing Peavy,LT & Gonzo in less then a year,so PLEASE lock him (Adrian) up,like now.

got a little off-topic i know. like the signing tho.

Pretty sure Gonzo has two more years on his contract!

yes,BUT there's been waaaayyyy too much trade talk around him,and for me ANY trade talk is too much. and he's the best non-Pujols 1st baseman in baseball so he deseves the money he's worth. a new contract is well-deserved IMO.
