There is 5 games remaining. 2 games need to be taken. We face 3 against the team we need to gain on.

That means when we play them we only need to be three games back, cause we have a chance to play them three times, and beat them three times.

Hence - Padres need to win at least one game against the Cubs to control there own destiny, regardless fo what the Giants do. Or else, we need SF too loose ONCE. And then we could loose our remaming games and still only be 3 back - hence needed - too control our own destiny.

Now, since the Giants and Padres both have a better win % than STL - then there will be no playoff game - it reverts too the best head to head record. Someone care too post head to head record this season against the Giants?

Hence - We win the division due to tiebreaker like we did against the Dodgers in o6?

Excerpts from Major League Rule 33 and Major League Rule 34

Scenario #1: If there is a tie for a Division Championship and the winning percentage of the two Clubs tied for first place is higher than the winning percentage of each of the second-place Clubs in the same League, the Division Champion shall be:

The Club with the higher winning percentage in head-to-head competition between the two tied Clubs during the championship season; or

If the Clubs remain tied, then to the tied Club with the higher winning percentage in intradivision games during the championship season; or

If the Clubs remain tied, then to the tied Club with the higher winning percentage in the last half of intraleague games during the championship season; or

If the Clubs remain tied, then to the tied Club with the higher winning percentage in the last half plus one of intraleague games during the championship season, provided that such additional game was not a game between the two tied Clubs. This process will be followed game-by-game until the tie is broken.

Example of Scenario #1: The Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners end the championship season tied for the AL West Division Championship. Both Clubs have a higher winning percentage than the Boston Red Sox. Through games of September 7, the Mariners have the higher winning percentage in head-to-head competition (7-6, .538) and would be declared the Division Champion. Oakland would be the Wild Card.

We lead the season series 10-5.

Still, I'm not comfortable with the idea of having to sweep the Giants to get into the playoffs. I'm not saying it can't happen, but I doubt it. IMO tomorrow (and tonight?) is HUGE. If we can go into the final series down by one game, I like our odds of being able to take 2 out of 3.

If Atlanta doesn't make the wild card. Tiebreaker is head too head record.

Being one game back in a series, and taking 2-out-3, we remain even.

If Atlanta wins out then it would be a play off. But it wouldn't be a straight win out of 4 games.

More of win 4 out of the next 5.

Philies might rest. They clinched already. You don't think some are gonna rest?

I still see the Philies WAAAAAAAAAYYY too good to get swept by ATL. I don't see them fielding a completely triple A team. No way.

They already clinched, and they won and scored 9. Alot of offense for a team thats clinched.

phillies arent playing for anything at this point and its in atlanta, no halladay, no oswalt. and we need to take 2 of 3 from san fran to force a one game playoff, assuming we win and they lose tomorrow....

even if we win tomorrow, and they win tomorrow, we need to win 3 to force a once game playoff. This time it's a straight sweep, and then another game on top of that!

It's like taking 4 straight games in a World Series type format. For the Division.

The philies had nothing to play for today, and they scored 9.

yup your right. confusing my self with all these different scenarios!

we both win, we remain 2 games back, we take three - one up.

but we would have to win the first game. if not, we would be 3 back, and 2 remaining.

we win the first game - we are one back.

we need to win the second game - tie

then we need too win the last one - as the third game - would be the tiebreaker.
