2012/2013 Draft: 1st, 2nd, 3rd Round

Who do we draft, should we draft, what positions.

I am thinking OL with two of the picks.

Kemp17 11-21-2012 02:34 PM

Perfect world, we address one of the OL needs and CB in free agency.

Then we can draft OL and pass rusher with the first two picks. In round three we could go a lot of ways. RB or ILB are two I would look at.

We need just about every position. Biggest need is O line so we should address that in the first couple rounds.

Biggest priorities on O: OT, OG, RB, WR, C, TE, QB (backup, this is not the year for drafting Qbs high)

Biggest priorities on D: OLB, CB, Safety, ILB

My mock as of today:

1. Taylor Lewan OT Michigan

2. Chase Thomas OLB Stanford

3. Mike Glennon QB North Carolina St

This is revision #1,358. A work in progress as always.

Just some friendly commentary...

While I agree with the philosophy on the first two picks, Thomas hasn't impressed me of late. He is tenacious, strong, smart, and uses his hands well. But he's pretty stiff and doesn't have a very good first step. Seeing as how we need to find someone to grow into the ROLB position, I would look elsewhere. His skillset seems like a fit at LOLB where Ingram is bound to play for the foreseeable future. I'm also guessing that Thomas will slide at least into the 3rd before it's all said and done.

Also, people are apparently talking about Glennon making a push into the upper rounds. Regardless, my opinion this season is that we need to save QB until really late... maybe even not draft one at all. Here's why: We need to use our top picks (at least 1-4) to address needs on the team so that we can assess whether or not Rivers is truly through (as opposed to just needing better protection and talent around him). Any QB you find in the late rounds is not going to be starter material unless it's a total fluke.

I say we pour all our resources into our needs outside of QB (esp. OL, OLB, and CB) and see what we have in Rivers. If he still can't pull himself together, then we'll know he's done here and we can spend a higher pick on a new QB. Seems to me that it's highly probable that we'll have to spend a 1st or at least 2nd on a QB for our next starter in any case, so taking one in the 3rd-5th right now would probably not help this team in the short or long term.

That's just the way I see it.

What is the point in going QB (which is unneccesarry anyway) when no QB could survive our line anyway?

I like your thinking though Wombat: Glennon is being severely underrated right now and when the "experts" in 2-3 months start to catch on they are going to talk about him as a riser. Unless he breaks his arm or gets caught with drugs or something.

Glennon is probably going in the 1st or early 2nd so it's not much use pegging him in the 3rd.

Kemp is right though. Better to blow our resources on the line and see what happens. If we draft a QB high next year because Rivers can't get it together then that QB will at least have a team around him and we would have done everything possible for Rivers.

I agree with everything especially the quoted. On to my next mock revision!

Since I don't do player analysis to the extent that you do, who are some pure pass rushers you see falling to the top half of the second round that would be a good fit?

JammerHammer23 11-21-2012 05:37 PM

Hopefully Carradine. He's been outplaying Werner IMO. I'd love to pick up Barr if he came out, but he might blow up the combine.

The beauty of this coming draft is its wealth of pass rushers coming out. I see many of them overflowing into the 2nd round.
