Default Antonio Gates Update - Expects to "Return To Form"

From UTSD today:

...

Gates used the word “excited” eight times during Monday's seven-minute conversation.
Asked if his foot is feeling 100 percent, Gates smiled and said “we're getting there.”
Asked if he expected the old Gates to return, the one who's dazzled year after year and routinely made men miss in the open field, he took it a step further.

GREAT news!!!

In before being moved to News Section.

Good to hear. I hope that Gates and our new addition can contribute this year. Do not expect much from the other guys we have.

Good to hear, but it sounds exactly like LT at the beginning of his last season in SD. I'll wait to see it on the field.

When he tore his plantar fascia last year, there was some speculation that it would ultimately be a good thing for Gates, because the injury can never fully heal until it fully tears. Every year he was going through the cycle of partially tearing it and then letting it scar up, and then partially tearing it again.

In the last few years there have been times when it looked like he was running barefoot on nails, and you just knew it was the plantar fasciitis flaring up. But then there were times when it wasn't really bothering him, like the beginning of 2010, and he looked like possibly the best player in the NFL.

Here's hoping he can have an entire season (and more) looking like early 2010 Gates, without pain so he can have fun and return to his old form.

Gates is one of three things

1. Truely healed up and going to return to form

2. Lieing to other teams/his coaches to keep his job.

3. Doing exactly what old players do when their bodies just can't do it anymore.

Hopefully it is the first one... but at this point I can't be to optamistic.

Gates is one guy who really doesn't need to worry about keeping his job.

I've knocked Gates as hard as anyone the last couple years, but in watching him for several years in interviews, I think you can tell a lot about how healthy he is by his demeanor. When he's healthy and feels good he's genuinely happy and jovial. When he's hurting and frustrated he tends to be much more guarded. But the mere fact that he's in OTA's working out with his teammates is a very good sign. He's spent a lot of time in the last three years being the guy riding an exercise bike in the training room while his teammates were out practicing the offense.

Also, the nature of his injury was such that the notion of him suddenly looking much healthier and returning to form isn't at all unrealistic.
