Default The NFL Changes Another Rule

The San Francisco 49ers had us all cracking up a couple weeks ago after three defenders held on the same play to keep Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints from scoring a touchdown at the end of the half. Well, all of us except for the Saints and the NFL, that is.

Greg Bedard of SI.com reports the league has tweaked the rules a bit to ensure this doesn’t become a regular practice.

“If it happens more than once, the officials have been instructed to call a 15-yard, unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for a ‘palpably unfair act,’ according to a league source and the time would be put back on the clock.”

The “palpably unfair act” reference here stems from the NFL’s rulebook in rule 12, section 3, which covers unsportsmanlike conduct (h/t David Fucillo of Niner Nation). Article 3 states“A player or substitute shall not interfere with play by any act which is palpably unfair.”

Obviously, the NFL sees what 49ers head coach Chip Kelly implemented against the Saints as a “palpably unfair” act.

What is strange is that teams can do it once before they get penalized.

It’s going to be fascinating to see if the 49ers or other teams use this once a game in key situations. If so, expect the NFL to tweak the rule again to make the act completely illegal.

Seems like a reasonable response to a tacky approach by any team.....

Sounds like the way they "tweaked" the rules for unnecessary roughness deep in the red zone because of the Donk Thugs. Still left them one free shot (for the love of the game, of course).
