Default Houston we may have a coaching problem.

So, I should say I really hate most of these guys. However I feel like they have a point. (I’ll link at the bottom)
I think we need to evaluate either Lynn and company or just simply Gus Bradley.
And before I start let it be known I LOVE our coaches. But we were better than that patriots road performance. Here’s. Few quick reasons why.
Really I’ll give you one:
Baltimore.
Do you guys remember how freaking badly we got WHOOPED week 16? What did we have, like 108 TOTAL yards in the first half? It was horrendous. They eat the clock up with ease (like New England) and slowly crawled down the field, would score, and our offense would come out and slam into a brick wall.
We couldn’t protect Rivers. Get a first down to save our life, and our offense would stagnate by the 40 yard line.
Sound familiar?

Flash forward to the playoff game and remember Lynn breaking down that post game playoff Ravens win? “Guys, It Felt Like We Doninated Out There!!” And we DID. It was like, what, 21 days difference?!

Exact same players.
Exact same coaches.
Just a few weeks apart.
How is that even possible?

Like I dare any of you to sit down, with your favorite adult beverage or food or game day comforts. Camp out and throw on our first chargers ravens game and then follow up immediately with the full playoff ravens game.

I mean if you didn’t know better, those games looked like different TEAMS on different YEARS!
I remember shouting, (talking to my girlfriend) “Babe! We just tackled behind the line of scrimmage!!” I mean how long has it felt since we’ve seen that? Oh and SACKS? 7? In a game? Against that same offensive line and GREAT running back and running attack that did SQUAT against us, again, on the grand scheme of things, days away from when we couldn’t stop them to literally win the division and save our life?

The only answer I have is coaching.
Typical chargers, back against wall and with an EMBARESSEMENT tape to study, they rebound with style and stomp. You bet your sweet butt if we played next week (if we had hockey playoffs lol) we would be rebounding with heroic flare.

But we don’t have time to rebound in the playoffs.
I’ve seen this pattern a few times now, if we don’t make a change now we could kill a ‘mccoy’ worthy number of years.
It was too late for LT
Couldn’t quiet get there for Gates (fingers crossed on a cheap bones bonus contract..that we all know isn’t happening)

We need a big day game plan whether that’s head coach or offensive, DEFENSE coordinator and Lynn just ‘trusting his guys’ too much. Brady was LAST against the blitz!! Among all starting qB’s!! When you see four isn’t working WHY KEEP SENDING FOUR?!

Evident by the ravens game, we can stop elite backs and we can do as we please. On a quick turn around with the SAME players.
We need coaches that don’t need a rebound tape.

I’m too old for this Charger crap to happen again next year.
Let’s go big time and get this crap fixed. THE Brady bill Mahomes, Mike Mayock with 200 first round picks.. this isn’t going to get any easier.

We need a new standard.

FIRST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are too old for 4-12, 5-11, or 12-4 plus a road playoff win ?

Preparing and flying back to the East Coast for 10am again ? They were gassed.

3 wild card teams won on the first week.

Zero won the next week.

Could you imagine ... had Desmond taken it to the house instead of fumbling and it was 28-14 at half instead of 35-7 ... then of course Gus waits until the half to make adjustments and we outscore a team that doesn't take their foot off the gas 21-6 in the second half ... final score 35-34 Chargers ala the Pittsburgh and K.C. games, I'd rather would of lost those 2 "regular season" games and won this one ... if only the football Gods were fair and just instead of cruel.

I kept telling people don't take anything from the Ravens game and try to forecast that foreword. The Ravens were getting by running a gimmick 3 play offense where the principles of normal defensive football didn't apply as much. The staff actually had a really good defensive gameplan the first time they played, but the players needed to see it again. When they did they shut it down completely.

Against New England the flaw I think was taking too much from the regular season game they played last year. In that game they shut the run down completely, held new england to field goals, and only lost because they had 2 TDs called back on penalties. The thought for the playoff game was probably if they played defensively like they did last year and did a little better offensively they'd win. They put N.E. in enough 3rd downs but couldn't get a stop so before you know it the game is 21-7 and that took us out of the offensive gameplan, which I believe was solid going in.

Unfortunately... since we are in such a tough division I think it will be difficult to win 12 games next year and in years to come... you have to make the most of your chances in the playoffs... but typical of Charger luck.... we are the 5th seed in the AFC while having the best record.... when has that ever happened? I wrote post after post about this in another thread... but I will say it again here.... 80% of the teams playing in the conference championship games (CCG) over the last 6 years have had 1st round byes... that means if you play on WC weekend... you have very little chance at making it to the CCG. Patriots are 20-3 in the playoffs at home.... 3-4 on the road.... Bolts LB corp was completely decimated and had to get creative with S to fill the role.... Pats had an extra week of rest, extra week to prepare and a whole game tape of the "penny" D to scrutinize. Two east coast trips on the road in a row in the playoffs after a grueling final 5 games of the season.... Add it all up?... Our chances were low to begin with. It did not help at all that Gus was too stubborn to change his D until halftime. I think the O did well enough to win all things considered.... 28 points on the road where the opportunities were limited by how bad the D was in the 1st half. So... sticking with the theme of this thread.... If their was a coach that should be removed... it should be Gus. Overall, I say that because when he left Seattle the Legion of Boom arose immediately afterwards. His D's tend to get worse the longer he stays and excel the season he leaves. He also had a terrible gameplan for the Patriots. It was obvious that they were going to dink and dunk us to death.... yet we were unprepared for it. We were the worst D in the NFL with respect to giving up yards to the RB out of the backfield. The look on D should have been different for this one. Play man-to-man 80%+ instead of zone. Let the athleticism advantage show... Instead, we let their game script dictate. It was horrible. For other franchises with this much talent... I would just say "add a few pieces here and there.... learn from your mistakes.... and get em next year".... but our track record for consistently making the playoffs is beyond poor... We could just as easily be 7-9 next year as we can be 12-4. This was a missed opportunity... but IMO... the bye week has become just too big of an advantage. I will no longer expect us to go far in the playoffs unless we have one... and with our division and 2019 schedule.... it is going to be tough as all heck.

We had one in 2006 and 2009. Lost the divisional game at home each time. We likely lost for other reasons in your post, not the bye. Did you forget ASAP?

I did not forget about ASAP... but again, the last 5 games were brutal and back-to-back early east coast games against tough teams was a lot to ask. SoCal teams do not have any real home field advantage... but it is better than traveling east and playing on the road in stadiums that do. But to reiterate... it is the bye itself that I think makes the most difference. And I think it is getting more important as time moves along. My Dr. was almost offered a job with the Chargers a couple of years back... he told one of the trainers.... "imagine how much better you could be if your players were close to 100% going into each game"... the response? "100%? We would be happy with 60% by the end of the year." Essentially the trainer was saying that these guys are often performing at less than 60% by the end of the year... Having an entire extra week of rest after 16 games is a distinct advantage. I am not trying to say that this Charger Team would have made the CCG or even the SB if they had the 1st round bye.... just that it would have been a far better probability.

sounds like he/coaches did an excellent job of fixing the problems in 21 days and getting the W at the crucial time?

would it have made you happy if we lost the playoff game?

sometimes coaches and teams game plan against you and it works...
its called "sports"

no one figured out the Ravens the final 7 or 8 games of the season... we were not the only ones who got out played and out coached by them down the final stretch of the regular season....

the browns in week 17 started to slow them down and give them trouble, we used some of what they did and some of what we learned from week 16 and turned it into a playoff win.

i don't know how this is something to be concerned about?
