I guess it could happen. The earlier mocks, a couple of months back, had James going to us, or around us.

Things happen in a draft -- surprising selections, or trades by teams wanting to move up -- that totally dictate the direction of the draft.

If that could happen to us with James or Vea, I'd be delighted.

I agree I think James is better suited as SS. Can he play FS, sure but I think SS would highlight his strengths a lot more. He's pretty good in man coverage as well, just not sure how he'd fit as a single high free safety.

He'll be useful when the rusher gets past Addae and the 2nd line of defense.

He's a great tackler.

He'd be an upgrade over Addae, though, if he were to be that in-the-box safety.

He's also an upgrade over Boston. Not only could he cover the way Boston did (maybe even better), but he could tackle AND he could blitz.

He may not be the best fit, but he would be the BPA available most likely if he were there at 17. And I'm sure we could find a way to fit the pieces together with him on board.

Who would guess that BOTH Lamp and Feeney would fall as far as they did?

I think there is a decent chance that Ronnie Harrison is there in round two for us... if he can get past pick #37, there is a shot...

NFL.com Rueter's 7 round mock

Los Angeles Chargers

Round 1 (17) Da'Ron Payne, DT, Alabama
Round 2 (48) Ronnie Harrison, S, Alabama
Round 3 (84) J.C. Jackson, CB, Maryland
Round 4 (119) Orlando Brown, OT, Oklahoma
Round 5 (155) Simmie Cobbs, WR, Indiana
Round 6 (191) Tegray Scales, LB, Indiana
Round 7 (251) Nick Keizer, TE, Grand Valley State

Undersells LB need, but I like the first 2 picks, and taking a chance on a fallen Brown in the 4th. Scales never lasts to the 6th, and the rest is meh...

Actually, the third round corner is a head scratcher...a reach at a position we are flush at?

Yep. I would at LEAST yank that 3rd rounder and take a LB...maybe someone like Jewell if he's there, if not, someone else. So u think Jewell's stock pushes him up to round 2?

Fred Warner, Genard Avery, and Christian Sam in that mid 3 to mid 4 range.
Will, Otto, Mike

You know I'm a big fan...but the media pundits aren't. They see midwestern red headed white kid, average size, playing in the Big Ten...they probably think he lacks that "twitchy" athleticism...and their eyes bounce right off him and land on the SEC and ACC prospects...despite him out testing a lot of those prospects...

They ignore the pop on film, the solid coverage skills, the impeccable diagnostics, the instincts which can't be taught...and he is a big time leader.

But I don't think teams are so ignorant...I'm sure several will be all over him in the second...

Thats just my eval, though. Here is a snippet from NFL.com...

"Jewell finished his career on a high note, being named first-team AP All-American and first-team All-Big Ten in his senior year (134 tackles, 13.5 for loss, 4.5 sacks, two interceptions, 11 pass break-ups, one forced fumble)."

"I like him a lot. I think he will run faster than people think for sure. Give me a guy with his mindset and instincts and I can sell him to a coaching staff even if he's not as big as they are looking for. His tape will win them over." - AFC Director of Scouting
