Which ring, he has 2. (I know you mean versus Seattle)

His rookie year, I have a hard time giving it to him because the defense won that year. Cowher had the handcuffs on Ben all the way. BUT, he was the QB.................

Would it be easier on you to put the cuffs on him?

I have an even harder time giving him a ring during his rookie year. Nothing to do with cuffs though, simply because it never happened.

Ben was a rookie in 2004 (just like Rivers and ShEli), and while the Steelers did go 15-1 in the regular season with him at the helm, they lost to New England in the AFCCG.

Ben won a SB in his second season (2005). While his defense was good, it was not as good as it was the 2nd time he won a SB in 2008. That '08 defense was one of the best ever in fact...

Thanks for the correction. 2005, Cowher made Ben manage games, and let the defense win. I guarantee it. Now tell me THAT never happened Mr. Fancypants.

Well, I don't think Cowher will ever be remembered for his high flying offenses.

However, Ben did have a career high of 8.9 yards per pass attempt in 2005. That is a pretty impressive number for any QB in fact. So impressive that it was the league leading number amongst all starting QB's that year. Not half bad for a game manger in the cuffs !

Was Pittsburgh's offense better than its defense that year ? Sure. Not exactly a rarity for Steelers football is it ? They had the #4 overall defense that year. Nowhere near as good as the #1 overall (without even a close second) 2008 defense was though. BTW- 2008 was the other year Ben won a SB ring, where apparently he played a bigger role.

Here is a comparison of the 2 Defensive units:

Total Yards per game
2005 - 284
2008 - 237.2

Points allowed per game
2005 - 16.1
2008 - 13.9

Passing yards allowed per game
2005 - 198
2008 - 156.9

Rushing yards allowed per game
2005 - 86
2008 - 80.2

INT's
2005 - 15
2008 - 20

Sacks
2005 - 47
2008 - 51

Opposing QB rating
2005 - 74.0
2008 - 63.4

So as you can see, the 2008 defensive unit was superior to the 2005 unit in every single way. With a much tougher schedule too.

So as for Ben's personal comparison between the 2 seasons:

Yards/Pass Attempt
2005 - 8.9 (career high)
2008 - 7.0 (career low)

Comp %
2005 - 62.7
2008 - 59.9 (2nd lowest of career)

Passing yards/game
2005 - 198.8
2008 - 206.3

TD passes/game
2005 - 1.42
2008 - 1.06 (Career low)

INT's/game
2005 - 0.75
2008 - 0.9375 (3rd highest of career)

QB Rating
2005 - 98.6
2008 - 80.1 (2nd lowest of career)

Now, it's your turn to explain to us how he was more deserving of a ring in '08, than he was with a 6th seeded Wild Card team that won it all in '05. I'll wait...

Ben's first super bowl gets discounted because he wasn't great in that game. Conversely, he gets more credit for the second win because he played better and made that incredible throw to Holmes.

But as the ChopStar has brilliantly pointed out perhaps we have it backwards?

None of this bolsters Rivers case. He's a notch below these guys

Superbowl wins are a team victory. QBs get way more credit than they deserve. Tom Brady, for example, is a much better QB after 2004 then before. And yet, he only managed to win 1 ring during that time versus 3 when he first started. Superbowls are, unfortunately, a matter of luck sometimes.

I will agree that Rivers is below Ben. But I still think if the roles were reversed with their respective teams, Rivers would be the one with rings. This is even more true when compared to Eli, who people forget was absolutely wretched for a stretch from 2012 to 2014.

I guess you didn't see Eli's clutch performances when it mattered most? Or notice that that is when Rivers falters the most?
