Default GusDraft: 43 Over/43 Under

We have a transition problem.

UP FRONT
Corey Liuget. Caraun Reid. Tenny Palepoi.
Damien Square. Sean Lissemore. Darius Philon.
6'2" 300#
We have too many 1Gap/3Tech DTs
from Pagano's 34 Hybrid Defense.

We need another 2Gap DT.
This would free up Liuget/Bosa. Protect Jatavis/Perryman.
Dalvin Tomlinson Round 3. Eddie Vanderdoes Round 5.

LEO/SAM
Melvin Ingram. Kyle Emanuel.
Jerry Attaochu. Tourek Williams.
All will rotate between LEO & SAM.
We don't have any true 4-3 OLBs with range/pass coverage ability.
Anthony Walker. Duke Riley. Round 3. Alex Anzalone Round 4.

BACK MIDDLE
Denzel Perryman. Korey Toomer.
Our MIKE position is deficient in pass coverage.
A FS with range can help reduce the size of the area
that they have to defend.
Malik Hooker Round 1. Budda Baker Round 2.
Marcus Williams Round 3. John Johnson Round 4.

If we draft defenders with specific needed skills,
the transition will go more smoothly,
and we will have greater flexibilty on defense.
Bradley is famous for late round nuggets.

Did you know that Seattle drafted Korey Toomer as their SAM back in 2014?

Move Emmanuel and Toomer to SAM. Joshua Perry to MIKE. Landrum showed good pass rushing abilities. Philon backs up Luiget and the position will not have to be drafted. Keep Flowers for depth.

Oh, and you won't have to re-sign Ingram for $11-15 million.

Unhappy Boop

This is a good thread to have bc we should probably be discussing this at length.

I'll first say that for LB personnel, we're pretty similar to Jax:

........W...............M.............S
Telvin Smith... Posluszny... Jack

I think Toomer and Brown are similar to Smith and Jack, so I think we would have:

Toomer........ Perryman...... Brown

Where Perryman is our downhill thumper and Brown can cover TEs if need be. If we bring back Toomer, we have 3 solid starters at LB.

I think it's important to keep in mind two things: (1) under and over are pretty different in terms of alignment, and (2) we'll still likely spend 70% of the time in a Nickel subpackage where we have just 2 LBs out there.

Let's dive into the fronts (parenthetical %s assume that we're evenly split between Under and over fronts while spending a majority of the time in Nickel).

4-3 Under (15-20%)

Though it's a "4-3" vs our existing "3-4", this is a pretty similar front to what we had this year, with the SAM down on the LOS responsible for contain vs the run.

In the Under, I think our existing personnel is quite good. I would expect to see Emanuel down there at SAM, Bosa as the 4 tech DE, Mebane as the 1 tech NT, then Liuget as the 3 tech DT and Ingram at Leo.

LB would probably be Brown and Perryman. Emanuel can be upgraded, but since this is a part time role that may not be necessary. SS generally gives me some concern... I really like Addae but can he consistently match up with TEs? TBD.

4-3 Over (15-20%)

This is the front that would be new/materially different for us, but as mentioned before I do think we have most/all of the personnel to run this effectively.

Left to Right:
SS Addae(?), 6 tech DE Bosa, SAM Brown, 3 tech DT Liuget, MIKE Perryman, NT Mebane, WILL Toomer, Leo Ingram.

I won't cover Nickel bc again I don't think it's much different than how we run now. Bosa and Ingram will be on the edge with 2 DTs, 2 LBs and 5 DBs. Again this will be ran 60-70% of the time (or in other sub packages that are similar).

So let's talk personnel holes:
- CB - if/when Flowers is cut, we probably need to add at least 1 quality CB in the draft (especially given Verrett's injury history)... one with size that can specialize in zone coverage would be nice.
- FS - true center fielder. Lowery is an average starter, not a liability but not a game changer either.
- SS - can Addae match up on TEs?
- Leo / SAM (under) depth. Emanuel can be replace but again this is only a part time role... also, Ingram is going to get paid, which tends to lead to a complacent season, and even if not we have to be concerned about his injury history... I know we have Jerry but he has injury issues of his own.
- 3 tech depth - Liuget is overpaid and will be a cap casualty candidate next offseason... it would be wise to start lining up a replacement.
- NT - Mebane was a great add last year, but he's aging and coming off a significant injury. The new system with added emphasis on 2-gapping DL makes me think we should add quality depth here.

Getting warm noobie defensive coordinators.

Watch NE try to defend the forward pass with their LBs vs Tevin and Devonta today.

Copycat league. Speedy RBs (Dalvin Cook!) as receivers. These dangerous rookie TEs coming in.

The Chargers need athletic LBs.

Also I want Bosa where he can do some damage, not doing dirty work as a 2Gap 3Tech or 2Gap 4Tech.

We are getting down to business here !!

Master those diagrams people--you can do it.

Agreed on Bosa but he'll spend a majority of the time as a 6+ gap while we're in Nickel which is what he did last year.

I actually really like him for the Over DE role.

Good stuff, DraftGuru.

Move Bosa around.

Move Liuget around to get something out of him.

Vanderdoes would be dynamite with his size, strength and quickness. He can anchor and penetrate.

I would really like to get Vanderdoes in the 5th and Big Stevie the NT from USC in the 6th.

Get 1 really good interior pass rusher and 1 really good run defender... plus, it would be wise to draft USC and UCLA as much as reasonably possible.

Here are 2 guys I like for Gusly's SS position.

Milano is a small OLB that covers TE's, fills and hits, and can even blitz effectively.

Eric Wilson is a small ILB. Covers TE's and RB's. Also a good fill and hit.
